San Sebastian Travel Guide & Money-Saving Tips

San Sebastian Travel Guide & Money-Saving Tips

This San Sebastian travel guide helps you eat brilliantly, choose the right season, and avoid paying August prices for the same bay and pintxos.

Pintxos, blue water and a city made for wandering

San Sebastián rewards anyone who likes to eat with a plan loose enough to change at the next bar. The Parte Vieja packs serious food into walkable streets, and a pintxo crawl feels more like the natural way to see the city than a meal you schedule around sightseeing.

La Concha is the other great pleasure: a calm, swimmable bay with a broad promenade and plenty of room to slow down between snacks. We love that the best days here can be beautifully simple, with a swim, a few small plates and another turn through the old streets.

This hub brings together what to know before going to San Sebastian and how to save money while still getting the most out of the trip.

Good to know

The Old Town's pintxos bars are the heart of the food scene. Order one or two at each bar and move on.

Best time to visit

Weather, prices, crowds and the events worth travelling for.

Spring

Great

Apr – May

Mild days and frequent showers, with easier Michelin bookings, lower hotel rates, and room to wander.

Summer

Good

Jun – Aug

Warm, driest weather and a 22°C sea, alongside peak hotel prices, busy bars, and Jazzaldia.

Autumn

Great

Sep – Oct

Warm days and a sea near 20°C, with falling prices after August and the film festival in September.

Winter

Good

Nov – Feb

Cooler days and the year's heaviest rain, balanced by cheaper beds, cider houses, and Tamborrada.

Cost saving tips

  • Stay outside August, when shoulder-season hotel rates can fall 30–40% and winter beds cost less again.
  • Eat a weekday menú del día at lunch for €14–18, then make dinner a standing pintxo crawl.
  • Use free San Telmo Tuesdays and Monte Urgull, and choose one of Jazzaldia's 47 free concerts.

Top tips

  • Order a drink first, take one or two pintxos per bar, and eat standing as you move through the Parte Vieja.
  • Keep track of what you eat because many bars use the honour system; tell the bartender and settle up before leaving.
  • Reserve Michelin restaurants weeks ahead, while Bar Nestor accepts no bookings and sells its tortilla twice daily.
  • Arrive before 1 pm or 8 pm for Bar Nestor's tortilla, which usually disappears soon after service begins.
  • Choose hot pintxos from the chalkboard when available, and aim for dinner after 20:30.
  • Swim at La Concha and leave Zurriola to the surfers if you want calmer water.

Packing tips

  • A packable rain jacket for Atlantic showers at any time of year.
  • A light warm layer for cool evenings, including summer nights.
  • Swimwear for La Concha's sheltered bay.
  • A quick-dry towel for beach stops between walks and meals.
  • Grippy walking shoes for Old Town cobbles and the Urgull and Igueldo paths.
  • Earplugs for rooms facing the Parte Vieja after the bars get busy.
