Bilbao Travel Guide & Money-Saving Tips

Plan a Bilbao city break around the Guggenheim and pintxo bars, with practical ways to cut hotel, airport and dinner costs.

Guggenheim curves and pintxo nights make Bilbao easy to love

Bilbao is a brilliant city break for anyone who likes their culture with a bit of edge. This former shipbuilding and steel port spent its industrial fortune on Frank Gehry's titanium Guggenheim, then built a city around the river that feels confident rather than polished smooth.

The food is reason enough to come back. In Casco Viejo, a pintxo crawl around Plaza Nueva turns dinner into a sociable wander between bars, with each stop offering a small bite and a different view of Bilbao's daily life. We prefer standing at the counter and letting the evening develop one bar at a time.

This hub brings together what to know before visiting Bilbao and how to save money while still getting the most from the city.

Good to know

Bilbao is a good base for San Sebastián, about 1.5 hours by bus. Hotels are usually cheaper.

Best time to visit

Weather, prices, crowds and the events worth travelling for.

Spring

Great

Apr – May

Mild 17–21°C days bring showers; shoulder-season prices and returning terraces come before summer crowds.

Summer

Good

Jun – Aug

Warm 25–26°C days are driest, while hotel prices rise and BBK Live and Aste Nagusia fill the city.

Autumn

Great

Sep – Oct

September stays warm before Atlantic rain builds in October; thinning crowds and easing prices make this a strong window.

Winter

Good

Nov – Feb

Mild 13–16°C days meet the year's wettest weather; cheaper rooms and local pintxo bars keep Bilbao lively.

Cost saving tips

  • Book outside Aste Nagusia and BBK Live weeks, when late hotel bookings can cost around three times as much.
  • Take the A3247 express bus from the airport into the centre instead of paying for a taxi.
  • Use a Barik card on the metro, tram and Bizkaibus rather than buying separate paper tickets.

Top tips

  • Pre-book Guggenheim Bilbao tickets for a timed entry, especially in summer when the walk-up queue can take an hour.
  • Keep your pintxo toothpicks and settle the bill when you leave; bars commonly use the honour system.
  • Stand at the bar during a pintxo crawl, since taking a table slows the experience and marks you out as a visitor.
  • Eat at local hours, with crawls around 12:00–14:00 or 19:30–21:30 and sit-down dinner from 21:00.
  • Contactless cards work in small bars, so carrying cash is rarely necessary.

Packing tips

  • A rain shell for showers that can arrive in any month.
  • Grippy shoes for the steep, polished-stone lanes of the Seven Streets.
  • A light layer for summer evenings that can fall to 15°C.
  • A swimsuit for the Getxo and Sopelana beaches in summer.
  • A foldable tote for market food and picnic supplies from La Ribera.
