Krabi Travel Guide & Money-Saving Tips

Krabi travel guide to boat-only beaches, island days and smart ways to spend less between Ao Nang and Krabi Town.

Limestone beaches, island days and excellent climbing

If you're thinking about southern Thailand, Krabi is an easy place to recommend. Limestone towers rise straight from the sea, and Railay's beaches are reached by boat rather than road, which gives the coast a wonderfully separate feel.

Phra Nang is the beach we would make time for: pale sand, towering cliffs and a cave shrine still used by local fishermen. Railay also has more than 700 bolted climbing routes, with options for complete beginners as well as experienced climbers.

This hub brings together what to know before going to Krabi and how to save money while still getting the most out of the trip.

Good to know

Railay Beach has no road access and is only reachable by longtail boat from Ao Nang or Krabi Town. Boats leave when full, and at low tide you'll wade ashore, so pack light.

Best time to visit

Weather, prices, crowds and the events worth travelling for.

Cool and dry season

Great

Nov – Feb

Dry days around 22–33°C and calm seas keep boat trips running; hotel rates and crowds reach their yearly peak.

Hot season

Good

Mar – Apr

Hotter days around 23–34°C bring early showers; prices ease from the peak, with Songkran crowds in mid-April.

Green season

Good

May – Oct

Short, heavy showers turn the interior lush; rooms are cheapest, while rough seas bring cancellations, especially in September and October.

Cost saving tips

  • Stay in Krabi Town for cheaper rooms and meals, then take the white songthaew to Ao Nang for ฿50, or ฿60 after 6pm.
  • Choose the shared four-island longtail at ฿800–1,200 instead of a ฿1,500–2,000 speedboat when the sea is calm.
  • Pair the ฿400 Emerald Pool ticket with Tiger Cave Temple's roughly ฿50 entry for a lower-cost inland day.

Top tips

  • Check the Grab estimate before taking an unmetered taxi and agree the fare before the ride starts.
  • Share a longtail to Railay from Ao Nang; boats leave when full between roughly 7am and 6pm, and a shared seat costs ฿100–150.
  • Eat at the Landmark Night Market across from Noppharat Thara Beach rather than paying beachfront dinner prices.
  • Visit Phra Nang Cave Beach early, before the day-trippers arrive in mid-morning.
  • In May–October, book rooms and tours only a few days ahead because boat cancellations can change plans.

Packing tips

  • Reef shoes for the Tup Island sandbar and Tonsai's rocky shoreline.
  • A dry bag for longtail crossings and spray during island trips.
  • Non-slip shoes for jungle trails and the rope-assisted Railay viewpoint scramble.
  • A packable poncho for short monsoon bursts during the green season.
  • Small baht notes for piers, songthaews and market stalls.
