Chiang Rai Travel Guide & Money-Saving Tips

Chiang Rai Travel Guide & Money-Saving Tips

Plan Chiang Rai travel around striking art temples, mountain views and low-cost local food, with practical tips that save time and money.

Modern temples and mountain dawns worth the detour

If you're considering Chiang Rai, go for the art. The White Temple is a genuinely strange, beautiful place, all mirrored surfaces, white plaster and reaching hands across its bridge. It feels unlike any other temple in Thailand.

The Blue Temple gives the trip a different mood, with deep blue walls, gold details and a huge white Buddha. Arrive early and the building is still wonderfully calm, giving you time to look properly rather than follow a tour group through it.

This hub brings together what to know before going to Chiang Rai, plus ways to save money while getting more from the trip.

Good to know

The White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) is best visited early, before tour buses arrive from Chiang Mai. Mornings are much quieter.

Best time to visit

Weather, prices, crowds and the events worth travelling for.

Cool and dry season

Great

Nov – Feb

Dry, mild days and clean air bring peak hotel prices and the year's heaviest visitor numbers.

Hot season

Good

Mar – Apr

Hot, smoky conditions bring lower room prices and thinner crowds, though mountain views can disappear.

Green season

Good

May – Oct

Warm days, heavy rain and lush tea hills bring the cheapest rooms and quietest streets.

Cost saving tips

  • Take the metered airport taxi into town for about ฿120–180 instead of booking a much dearer private transfer.
  • Rent a scooter for ฿200–300 per day when visiting nearby sights, rather than paying ฿1,300–1,800 for a Chiang Mai day tour.
  • Eat at local khao soi shops or the Night Bazaar, where bowls cost about ฿40–80 and hot-pots start at ฿100 for two.

Top tips

  • Visit the White Temple at its 8am opening and the Blue Temple around 7am, before tour buses arrive.
  • Carry cash for small restaurants and market stalls, including Khao Soi Islam on Isarapap Road.
  • Use Grab for taxis and agree on a tuk-tuk fare before getting in.
  • Keep small notes handy, since market vendors may not have change for large bills.
  • Watch the Clock Tower's free music-and-lights show at 7pm, 8pm or 9pm beside the Night Bazaar.
  • Expect markets to start early and the Night Bazaar to wind down around 10:30pm.

Packing tips

  • A warm layer for Phu Chi Fa dawns and cool winter evenings.
  • A scarf or sarong for covering shoulders and knees at temples.
  • An N95 mask for smoke during the February–April burning season.
  • Slip-on sandals for temple visits where shoes come off repeatedly.
  • A packable rain jacket for green-season downpours.
