Edinburgh Travel Guide & Money-Saving Tips

An Edinburgh travel guide to castle walks, festival timing and simple ways to spend less without missing the city's best experiences.

A castle-topped old town made for wandering

Edinburgh is the kind of city where a walk keeps paying you back. Start near Waverley, climb towards the Castle and follow the Royal Mile through medieval closes, crooked lanes and viewpoints that make you stop mid-sentence. The centre is compact enough to explore on foot, with no car needed for a rewarding city break.

We also love the way the city opens out at Arthur's Seat. One climb puts you above the rooftops, with the Old Town, the castle and the Firth of Forth laid out below. Come back down for free museums, a pub, or a wander through streets that still feel lived-in rather than staged for visitors.

This hub brings together what to know before going to Edinburgh and how to save money while still getting the most out of the trip.

Good to know

The city fills up and prices spike in August during the Fringe and festivals. Book accommodation months ahead, or visit another month for much lower prices.

Late spring

Great

May – Jun

Mild highs of 15–18°C, lower hotel rates and lively streets that remain comfortable to walk.

High summer

Good

Jul – Aug

Highs of 17–19°C with showers, festival prices rising 100–200% and packed Old Town streets.

Early autumn

Good

Sep – Oct

Mild highs of 13–17°C, falling rates after the festivals and calmer access to major sights.

Winter

Good

Nov – Feb

Highs of 5–8°C with frosty nights, the year's cheapest rooms and December crowds for Christmas and Hogmanay.

Cost saving tips

  • Book Edinburgh Castle and Military Tattoo tickets online in advance, since summer dates sell out weeks ahead.
  • Take the airport tram instead of a £22–26 taxi, then use contactless taps on Lothian buses and trams for the daily cap near £5.
  • Stay and eat in Leith, Stockbridge or Portobello, where rooms can run 20–30% below Royal Mile rates during Fringe weeks.

Top tips

  • Pay by contactless on buses, trams and in pubs; Lothian's TapTapCap keeps city transport close to £5 a day.
  • Choose your Hogmanay entry gate when buying the ticket because it cannot be changed, and keep the paperless QR ticket available offline.
  • Eat in Leith or Stockbridge for better value than the Royal Mile, where haggis pubs charge tourist rates.
  • Order at the bar in pubs and round the bill up rather than adding a percentage.
  • Book August accommodation six to twelve months ahead, or shift to May, June or September for lower prices and lighter crowds.
  • Visit the National Museum of Scotland and National Galleries for free, then climb Arthur's Seat without paying for a viewpoint.

Packing tips

  • A packable rain jacket for showers and wind off the Firth of Forth.
  • Sturdy waterproof shoes for Royal Mile cobbles and the Arthur's Seat climb.
  • A warm mid-layer for cool North Sea winds, including in July.
  • An eye mask for June's near-10pm daylight.
  • A small day pack for free museums and the Water of Leith walkway.
