York Travel Guide & Money-Saving Tips

Plan a York trip around its walkable medieval sights, seasonal crowds and local ways to spend less without missing the best of the city.

Medieval streets, ancient walls and a city made for wandering

York is wonderfully easy to love: within one compact centre, you can walk from the leaning houses of the Shambles to the medieval city walls and keep finding another snickelway, courtyard or riverside view.

The walls are our favourite way to get your bearings, while York Minster gives the city its scale. Add the underground Viking-age experience at Jorvik and you have a short break with plenty to do on foot, without spending the trip in taxis or on trains.

This hub brings together what to know before going to York and how to save money while still getting the most out of the trip.

Good to know

Walking the medieval city walls is free and gives a great overview of the centre. The full circuit takes about two hours.

Best time to visit

Weather, prices, crowds and the events worth travelling for.

Spring

Good

Mar – May

Mild days and quieter walls before school holidays, with generally better room rates than summer.

Summer

Great

Jun – Aug

Warm days and long evenings suit the walls, while crowds and hotel prices peak around Ebor race week.

Autumn

Good

Sep – Oct

Cooler, misty mornings and golden gardens bring fewer visitors, with midweek rooms dropping below weekend rates.

Winter

Good

Nov – Feb

Cold, quiet January and February are cheapest; the Christmas market brings festive crowds and peak prices from 12 November.

Cost saving tips

  • Stay midweek, especially in late November, to avoid the sharp weekend and Christmas-market premium.
  • Use York's park-and-ride services instead of paying for scarce city-centre parking.
  • Compare the Visit York Pass with individual attraction tickets; it can pay off at around three paid sights.

Top tips

  • Book Jorvik timed tickets online several days ahead because popular sessions sell out.
  • Pay by contactless at shops and market stalls; carrying cash is rarely necessary.
  • Eat on Bishopthorpe Road or Fossgate for better-value menus than the restaurants beside the Shambles.
  • Arrive at Shambles Market around 11:30am for lunch before the main rush, with portions commonly costing £6–10.
  • Reserve Skosh, weekend dinner tables and Sunday roasts well ahead of your visit.
  • Walk the Bootham Bar to Monk Bar stretch early, before the walls become busy and while the gates are open.

Packing tips

  • Comfortable walking shoes for cobbles, wall-top paths and the Minster tower steps
  • A packable rain jacket for changeable weather beside the Ouse
  • A warm layer for evening ghost walks and candlelit Evensong
  • Gloves and a scarf for December market evenings
  • A British three-pin adapter for non-UK chargers
  • A refillable water bottle for wall walks and Museum Gardens
